Match details:
Kolkata Knight Riders vs Rajasthan Royals Match – Eliminator, IPL 2018
23rd May 2018
Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Venue:
The pitch at Kolkata has been kind to both the batsmen and bowlers. It is more pacer friendly but spinners can also extract some purchase from the wicket. The ball comes on to the bat nicely at the Eden Gardens and scores around 170-180 are expected.
Preview:
Kolkata have the momentum with them as they come into the match on the back of 3 victories. They will be the more confident side out of the two, having dealt handsomely with the SRH bowling unit to win the last game. Uthappa regained form, Narine gave them an explosive start, and Karthik finished well as has become the norm. The bowling of Prasidh at the death was good news for KKR as well as Russell bowling his full quota again.
Rajasthan choked RCB with spin in their last match as Shreyas Gopal bagged 4 wickets in a match-winning performance. They played smartly to ensure they stay in the hunt and Delhi did them a favour by defeating MI. Tripathi got to open following Buttler’s departure and he responded with an unbeaten 80. Klaasen, who was brought in place of Stokes, ensured they finished well while Gopal did the rest to help RR register a 30-run win.
The Knight Riders will consider themselves favourites since they will be playing at home. However, they will be wary of Royals’ improved performance against RCB. Earlier, KKR did the double over Rajasthan this season by chasing down the targets with ease. This is the first knock-out match in this season’s IPL and is expected to be a cracker as there’ll be no second opportunities for the losing team.
Head to Head:
Total matches played: 17
Kolkata Knight Riders: 8 wins (47%)
Rajasthan Royals: 9 wins (53%)
Form:
Kolkata Knight Riders: L L W W W
Rajasthan Royals: W W W L W
Last Match’s Playing XI and probable changes
Kolkata Knight Riders
Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c & wk), Andre Russell, Shubman Gill, Javon Searles, Piyush Chawla, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav
Probable changes – None. KKR look like they’ve found their ideal playing XI and it is unlikely that Karthik would change the winning combination.
Rajasthan Royals
Rahul Tripathi, Ajinkya Rahane (c), Sanju Samson, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Stuart Binny, Krishnappa Gowtham, Jofra Archer, Shreyas Gopal, Ish Sodhi, Jaydev Unadkat, Ben Laughlin
Probable changes – None. Rahane would like to bring in a proper batsman in for Binny. However, apart from Short, he doesn’t have many options with the 4 foreigners working well, Short should remain on the bench.
Top point scorers:
Kolkata Knight Riders
Sunil Narine (401 points) – The all-rounder has been KKR’s talisman this season, performing with both bat and ball. He has picked up 16 wickets and bowled at an economy of 7.62 runs per over. Narine has also done his job as a pinch-hitter well, striking at 189 as an opener.
Dinesh Karthik (367 points) – The captain has played his role as a finisher for the Knight Riders perfectly. He paces his innings as per the requirement of the match and has stayed unbeaten in all of KKR’s successful run chases except one. Despite coming in lower down the order, he is their leading run-scorer with 438 runs at an average of 55. He stayed unbeaten at 42 and 41 in both of Kolkata’s wins over Rajasthan this season.
Rajasthan Royals
Sanju Samson (279.5 points) – The youngster looked like he was going to have his breakout season midway through the tournament but he flattered to deceive in the second half. Samson has scored 391 runs so far at an average of 30 and a strike rate of 139. This includes two fifties and a high score of 92.
Ajinkya Rahane (233.5 points) – The Royals captain, like all other RR batsmen apart from Buttler, has been inconsistent this season. In the absence of the Englishman, Rahane will have to step up to make sure their late effort to qualify for the playoffs doesn’t end in vain. He has scored 324 runs so far with a solitary fifty at an average of 27. Facing KKR in Jaipur, Rahane played an unusually brisk knock, scoring 36 runs in just 19 balls.
Doubtful Pick:
D’Arcy Short (RR) @ 8.5 credits
The Australian has had an underwhelming tournament. When Buttler and Stokes departed, RR chose Klaasen over Short, and the South African promptly delivered. Against a side that has some of the best spinners in the tournament, he is expected to continue on the bench unless there is an injury.
He was selected in nearly 1/3rd of the teams for RR’s win over RCB.
Value Pick:
Prasidh Krishna (KKR) @ 8.5 credits
The uncapped bowler, who was signed to replace the injured Kamlesh Nagarkoti, has been sensational for KKR. Krishna’s bowling at the death has been impressive and he has picked up 9 wickets in 5 innings. He comes into the match on the back of a confidence-boosting 4-wicket haul in the last match.
He was a part of 36% of the teams for KKR’s last match.

Suggested team balance:
The wicket at Eden will be a fair one, providing equal assistance to batsmen and bowlers alike. The match will see a plethora of high-impact all-rounders take the field. Hence, it is suggested you fill your team with the maximum allowed all-rounders – 3. There’s a host of young talent to choose from which would help you stick to your budget while Uthappa, Klaasen, Krishna and Gowtham could be your impact players.
